Melamine in U.S. Infant FormulaTraces of the industrial chemical melamine have been detected in samples of top-selling infant formula in the U.S. However, federal regulators insist the products are safe. FDA officials say the levels detected in the formula are extremely low and most likely became contaminated with melamine through the manufacturing process or through contact with can liners. One doctor - says it would be a dangerous overreaction for parents to stop feeding infant formula to babies who depend on it. Nutritionist Cherie Calbom can't get enough of fruits and vegetables. But instead of just eating them raw, she juices. “I'm making the ginger hopper and it's so easy: just carrot, apple and ginger,” Calbom said. Calbom, the author of the juice lady's guide to juicing for health, calls her concoctions "nutrition in a glass." “Juice is a wonderful supplement. It is a vitamin, mineral, enzyme cocktail,” she said. She says compared to store-bought juice, the homemade version is lower in sugar and higher in fiber. “You're losing your insoluble fiber. You're keeping your soluble fiber, which is great for the colon great for colon health. You're keeping about 95% of your nutrients,” she said. Calbom says fresh juice could be just what you need to give you a health boost during cold and flu season. “I'd add some lemon because the white pithy part of that lemon is rich in vitamin C and bioflavinoids. I'd add ginger because it is rich in zinc and it's an anti-inflammatory and it really helps to boost up the immune system,” she explains.
