Selecting the right pet

There are several factors to consider when trying to select the right pet. These include the size of your home and yard, the amount of money you want to invest, and the time and attention you can give the pet. Fish, for example, require little room, are relatively inexpensive, and need almost no attention. Reptiles, too, are low-maintenance pets and ideal for owners that travel. Pets such as gerbils are small and have short life spans, so they don't require an extended commitment. Dogs and cats require the most attention, cost, and responsibility, but they respond with love, affection, and loyalty. When selecting a dog or cat, there are further questions to answer. Will it be an inside or outside pet? Does your space allow for a large or small animal? Are you interested in a pet for play, sport, or show? Experts recommend becoming familiar with the unique characteristics different pets offer in order to select the one that best meets your needs. For more information on selecting the right pet, consult a pet store or veterinarian in your area.
